"If you feel like the world is a bit weird when others criticise you for pointing out the obvious flaws in their reasoning/beliefs, then come to this group for some rational thinking."
"In the short time I have been in the group I have noted a divercity of interest among members. I don't if that is because skeptics are interested in a lot of things or simply cannot focus of one stream. Either way it doesn't matter. It is still one of the more interesting groups of people."
"I can safely take off my aluminium helmet in the company of sceptics because none of them can read minds."
"It a place where people can get together and share ideas and opinions, feel welcome and meet like minded people."
"It's a great bunch of people with lots of lively discourse."
"It's a good chance to get involved in the skeptic scene and is a good platform for people to find out more about what skepticism has to offer"
"Far too many meetups groups are quite literally 'off with the fairies'. Come along and meet normal, rational people not afraid of a good laugh or a stiff drink !"
Welcome to the Sydney Sceptics Meetup group!
The aim of this group is to bring together like-minded people interested in exploring through critical thinking and lively discussion, some of the strange things our world presents to us.
Whether it be miracle cures like magnets, breast enlargement through herbs and massage (this is true people), conspiracy theories, UFO and alien believers, psychics and cold readers, crop circles, dodgy claims about health care and food products, misinformation in the media (try watching "Sensing Murder" on Ch 9 - yes, it's back on Richard) etc., etc., we want to know about it! Currently we are pigging-backing meetings with the Australian Skeptics, who meet once a month for "Skeptics in the pub" (see the calendar for details).
Apart from this, we aim to use this page as a sort of bulletin board for our members, to keep you up to date on sceptical/sciencey events around town. You will notice some of the events have a disclaimer explaining they are not official meetings as such, but a chance for you to attend independently if you choose.
We also have a page of links (click here to the see the links page) to other sceptics from around the country and the world, where you will find links to podcasts/vodcasts. There is a mixed bag presented here, covering science, scepticism and sceptical comedy. We will also try to post interviews/articles/links etc to draw to your attention from time to time. The first interview, to be posted very soon, is our very own organiser Nathan, discussing atheism and science with Dr Peter Bowden on ABC702 (can't wait for that!)
We welcome suggestions, comments/criticisms, shout-outs and ideas for discussion. The most important thing is to keep this group active and productive.
Cheers
Nathan and Rachael
Disclaimer: the correct British/Australian spelling for sceptic is just that. You may notice variations between the American (with a "k") and the "c" on this site. This is because we have content from all over the world. This is a Sydney-based group, therefore we spell it with a "c". I apologise for the confusion, but I am a pedant. -R
