The topic is:

Crime and Detection: The Story of Forensic Science

Sherlock Holmes solved criminal cases only with the help of his magnifying glass and his sense of observation. Today the police can make use of a vast array of scientific techniques from computer fingerprints analysis to DNA profiling. This lecture presents the history of forensic science together with some famous cases ranging from the story of the Poison Umbrella to that of O.J. Simpson.. The lecture concludes with an analysis of several well-known literature and movie thrillers from the chemist's perspective. The lecture is well-suited to a wide-ranging audience with or without a science background

It is being presented by CFI MTL, McGill Freethought, and the McGill Office for Science and Society.

ROOM - OMC 10 @ The Otto Maass Chemistry Building of McGill University

We had a meeting beforehand at 4:30 and also went out for drinks on the campus after the talk. We wrapped up around 10:30pm. So the organizers were there from 4:30 to 10:30pm. Some of our Meetups are get togethers, simply to chat. Some involve a presentation with a bit less socializing. This was the latter. I like the idea of meeting before (or after) to discuss and socialize. Others seem to approve, so let us do that.

Randall, have a look at Fouad's comment here: http://www.meetup.com/cfimo... He says people should meet for coffee after these meetups. I think that's a great idea.

    I went, I listened, I didn't meet anyone. What's the point?

We are having a general meeting before our event on November 20, 2009. This is an open invitation to all, members and non-members alike. The meeting takes place from 4:30 to 5:30pm and will be in the same room as our scheduled event (ROOM - OMC 10). This meeting is great opportunity to meet other likeminded individuals. It is also a good way to get involved. ROOM - OMC 10 @ Otto Maass Chemistry Building

Gruesome stuff, and completely irrelevant to a 'skeptic' crowd...

This Meetup was really interesting. A couple of the scientific details were beyond me, but that didn't take away from all the fascinating details presented. We learned about a number of cases where people were wrongly imprisoned, and eventually released due to scientific evidence. We learned about some poisons and some famous cases of poisoning. Dr. Fenster is a great speaker and he added some humour to the presentation.
