Professor L. Maynard Moe will make a presentation entitled, "Was Darwin Wrong? Darwin and the Modern Synthesis." In this presentation, Dr. Moe will explore how modern techniques of genetics and DNA analysis have reshaped our understanding of evolution and whether this understanding has undermined the accuracy of Darwin's Origin of Species. He will consider whether Darwin should be considered a great scientist in the league of Einstein and Newton.

Professor Moe, who has been with California State University Bakersfield since 1976, is an evolutionary biologist especially interested in plant evolution and plant taxonomy. He teaches Botany, Ecology, Advanced Ecology, Plant Taxonomy, Evolution, and an interdisciplinary course with Dr. Oliver Rink (History) called Plagues and People. Professor Moe grew up in Yosemite National Park (infancy through college), graduated from Fresno State (BA, MA) and UC Berkeley (PhD). He has traveled extensively in Europe, Southern Africa, Chile, and Yemen (especially the island Socotra).

After the extra large attendance at the last meeting, we are asking for RSVP to this meeting. Seating is limited, so please RSVP. Guests and prospective members are welcome.

    •  This was an excellent presentation by Professor Moe. It was informative, entertaining, and well-grounded in science and current information concerning Darwin. There was a lively Question-and-Answer session following.

Thinking about it again...what a vast subject for so little time! And yet Dr. Moe brought up several key major facts or referenced several complexes of related data, to put it another way, all of which was worthwhile to hear.
