Our group promotes science, reason, and free exchange of ideas. We started out as a Center for Inquiry discussion group, but we decided to become independent, and so now we have nothing officially to do with the Center for Inquiry. Nevertheless, we are sympathetic to their causes, and we applaud the efforts of all skeptics groups. We encouage darned near anything scientific, and we want to do our part to promote rational thought in public discourse. (Your rationality in private is none of our business.)
Most months, we have an educational meeting. Recent topics have ranged from the threat of bioterrorism (not much threat) to the role of the humanities in a technological society (a major role in deciding what values are important). Members have the opportunity to fellowship with other free thinkers.
Anyone can "join" the Meetup site, and anyone can attend a meeting, but to actually join the Bakersfield Area Skeptics Society requires completion of a membership form (click on "files" to the left) and payment of dues. Only members may vote in meetings.

Listing here is not an official endorsement. Absence of a listing here is not an insult. We're just trying to be helpful.
Thanks to Eddy Lee for arranging to have Maria Paleologou, PhD, a lecturer in the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at California State University Bakersfield, as our speaker in October. The topic is still being refined.
Dr. Paleologou received her BA, MA, and PhD from the University of Oklahoma. Her specializations include the history of ancient philosophy and normative ethics. Read more
This group doesn't have any additional upcoming Meetups scheduled.
