The Young Skeptics - East Valley
|
Do you cringe when friends, classmates or co-workers lecture you about horoscopes, alien abductions, psychics, conspiracy theories, homeopathic remedies or the "law of attraction?" Do you worry that our society has forsaken rationality and critical thinking for self-delusion and fantasy? Have you struggled to find others in your age group who share those concerns? Our culture's shift toward "magic thinking" has been so powerful that the majority of Americans now regard skeptics and free thinkers as bitter, arrogant and spiritually lost. But in truth skeptics are very positive thinkers. They are inspired by the beauty and complexity of the physical universe, and guided by a deep respect for its known laws and limitations. Skeptics regard all wishful embellishments and misinterpretations as unhealthy, because they create false expectations and inhibit critical thinking; and as pointless, because wishing something doesn't make it so. The Young Skeptics is for people who strive to see the world around them for what it truly is. It is for people who pride themselves on reasoned debate and informed discussion.
